Farmers in Senegal restore nearly 100,000 trees through traditional techniques
In a promising development for climate resilience efforts, Justdiggit and its local partners have successfully completed the first year of a regreening initiative in Senegal’s Peanut Basin. The pilot project, launched in January 2024, revitalized the traditional “Karkaral” tree recovery technique across 30 villages in the Thies, Diourbel, and Fatick regions.
Within just one year, more than 2,300 farmers received training, with over 1,700 implementing these methods on their own land. Their efforts have recovered nearly 100,000 trees across 9,000 hectares, achieving an impressive 80% adoption rate among participating communities.
The project combines traditional knowledge with modern approaches, including a farmer-to-farmer training model and comprehensive rural communication strategies. Looking ahead, Justdiggit and its implementing partners—URAPD, JIG JAM, and RECODEF—plan to expand the initiative to 500 villages over the next decade, aiming to regreen 230,000 hectares and restore over nine million trees.
The organisations are currently seeking strategic and financial partners to scale up these efforts and enhance community resilience against climate change impacts.
