Justdiggit expands the Kijani App to Kenya

Today, at the International Trade Fair in Nairobi, Justdiggit Foundation officially launches the Kijani App in Kenya, a bold step toward scaling digital regreening solutions across Sub-Saharan Africa. Available in English and Kiswahili, the free mobile app helps farmer-facing organisations scale their impact while equipping smallholder farmers with practical tools to restore land, improve soil, and adapt to climate change.

One of Kijani (green in Kiswahili) App’s new features allows farmer-facing organisations to create dedicated profiles, share tailored communications with their members, and monitor collective progress. Farmers can now link directly with their organisations through the Kijani App, receive relevant training and program content in real time, and expand their regreening efforts with guidance specific to their region.

To strengthen its rollout, Justdiggit has partnered with various organisations, including PELUM Kenya, a national network of 65 member organisations promoting agroecology among smallholder farmers and pastoralists in Kenya. Through partnerships like these, the Kijani App will reach thousands of farmers across Kenya, enabling them to access localised training, farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange, and practical regreening content that can be applied directly to their farms.

The launch builds on the success of Kijani’s debut in Tanzania in 2024 during Nane Nane (Farmers’ Day). Since then, the app has been downloaded more than 20,000 times and used by thousands of farmers to learn techniques such as composting, rainwater harvesting, and preventing soil erosion. This early adoption has paved the way for expansion into Kenya, where over 80% of the rural population depends on agriculture, yet faces urgent challenges of land degradation and unpredictable weather.

“The Kijani App is good because I have been able to learn how to make compost manure and prevent soil erosion on my farm. My ambition is to become a model farmer by regreening, conserving the environment, and protecting natural vegetation,” says Jeremiah Jackson, a farmer who has completed seven courses on the app, from Singida, Tanzania.

Kijani demonstrates how technology can bridge the gap between traditional farming knowledge and modern climate challenges. By combining digital training, farmer-to-farmer learning, and traditional training, Justdiggit is providing communities with the tools to scale up regreening faster than ever before. This approach ensures that farmers are not only equipped with techniques but also supported to track and celebrate their progress.

Launching the Kijani App in Kenya marks a significant achievement in our mission to inspire millions to regreen Africa. To enhance our efforts, we are partnering with farmer-facing organisations that connect with thousands of farmers. Through our digital regreening tools, we can share valuable knowledge that helps farmers restore their land, improve their livelihoods, and build climate-resilient communities. We believe regreening is done together, and every new partnership brings us closer to transforming lives, landscapes, and ultimately cooling down the planet,”  Marjolein Albers, CEO of Justdiggit.

The Kijani App is available for free download on the Google Play Store in Kenya and Tanzania, in both Kiswahili and English. Next year, the app will be rolled out in additional African countries, with new features and languages added to meet the diverse needs of smallholder farmers and pastoralists.
