Langata – August 2025
Bund digging at the Langata site began in early February 2024, with 122 community members involved. This included 22 supervisors and 100 community members who supported in digging the bunds. The supervisors are trained on drawing the bunds and ensure that the quality standards (e.g. spacing, size, depth, positioning) are met. Each supervisor works with a group of around 10 community members who support the digging process. After the digging period, the area has received three short rains, which have already sparked the germination and growth of grasses across the site.
The first signs of recovery are clearly visible. In addition to the growing vegetation inside and around the bunds, wildlife has started to return. Giraffes and zebras are now frequently spotted in the area!
At the same time, the site is not without its challenges. Limited rainfall and some grazing pressure continue to threaten the fragile regrowth. In response, members of the local grazing committee are actively working with herders to prevent early grazing and raise awareness about the importance of allowing the land to fully recover. Their efforts are helping to protect the gains made so far and ensure that the restoration process continues. Thanks to the continued care and commitment of the community, the Langata site is steadily transforming into a healthier landscape.
