Maasai women celebrate an incredible milestone with grass seed banks!
The Maasai women of the Nolasiti grass seed bank in Kenya have achieved something truly inspiring! This January, they earned over 500,000 KES from their very first grass seed harvest. Their determination, despite facing droughts and challenging rainy seasons, has turned hard work into life-changing results.
Established in April 2023 with our support and that of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT), the Nolasiti grass seed bank has given 20 women the opportunity to create a sustainable source of income while restoring their land. For many, this income couldn’t have come at a better time, helping pay school fees, access healthcare, and support family needs during the critical back-to-school period.
The success of the Nolasiti group is part of a larger movement across Kuku Group Ranch. In 2024, seven women’s groups earned a combined 3 million KES, directly benefiting 126 households and positively impacting over 1,000 people.
We provided resources for fencing, sowing, and harvesting, supporting these women to turn land restoration into a thriving business. The resilience and dedication of the Nolasiti women have shown what’s possible when communities take action to combat the challenges of drought and climate change. Together, they’re proving that restoration is not just about the land—it’s about transforming lives.
