Mkalama Cluster C Treecovery Update – May 2026
An update on cluster C!
Similar to other areas in the Singida region, the cluster experienced significantly reduced rainfall last year. Fortunately, wheather conditions have improved since the beginning of this year. We have faced some challenges with regards to the enforcement of agreed measures and establishing by-laws to protect trees within village forest reserves. Despite these constraints, however, Cluster C recorded a 2% increase in trained active households. These households restored 5,856 trees since January alone, bringing the total number of restored trees in the cluster to 720,884!
A story from a Simon Kitundu, one of the champions in cluster C
On his farm in Lyelembo village, Tanzania, Simon Kitundu is demonstrating how simple land restoration practices can transform productivity. By digging Fanya Juu and Fanya Chini trenches, he has reduced soil erosion and retained vital soil moisture, improving overall soil health. After just one rainy season, he harvested more than 15 bags of crops from less than a hectare, something he had never achieved before. He even planted twice in a single rainy season for the first time, showing how these practices can lead to higher yields and stronger livelihoods.
