Successful monitoring and technical visit in Manyara with partner MVIWAMA
Last month, our team conducted a crucial monitoring and technical support visit in Manyara (Tanzania) with our INCLUDE partner MVIWAMA, to support sustainable farming practices in the region. The visit included stops at the Hanang and Babati project sites, where we observed the successful implementation of Treecovery and the rainwater harvesting techniques Fanya Juu and Fanya Chini.
Key Lessons from the Field
Amidst changing rainfall patterns, it’s become evident that farmers must adopt techniques like Fanya Juu and Fanya Chini. These methods help manage water flow into farms, mitigating the risks of soil erosion and ensuring more consistent crop production despite fluctuating rainfall.
As you can see in these pictures, Treecovery is also showing promising results, with rapid and noticeable improvements. Proper management, especially timely pruning, is essential to its success. We were thrilled to see the positive impact these practices are having on the ground.
Supporting Local Champions
During our visit, we placed a strong emphasis on supporting Champion Farmers—selected individuals who are highly respected and skilled within the Treecovery project areas. These farmers play a pivotal role in their communities, not only inspiring and teaching fellow farmers how to begin regreening but also assisting in monitoring the impact of these projects.
To enhance their effectiveness, we provided them with essential training in accurate data collection and reporting. Their efforts are crucial for effective monitoring and evaluation, ensuring that the progress we witness today is sustained well into the future.
