What your net-zero targets are missing

The race to net zero is on. Thousands of companies worldwide are setting ambitious climate targets. However, cutting emissions inside your own value chain is only part of the story. Net-zero alone isn’t enough and companies can step up through BVCM. We’re taking you along to get the full picture on how you can make a bigger impact.

The facts don’t lie

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) makes it clear: to keep 1.5°C within reach, companies must not only reduce their internal emissions, but also take action beyond their value chains. This approach, called Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM), is about investing in solutions that cut or remove emissions elsewhere, restore ecosystems, and support communities on the frontlines of climate change.

And importantly: BVCM is not a replacement for abatement. It’s the extra step that accelerates the global transition to net-zero and helps companies take responsibility for their unabated emissions along the way.

Why net zero needs more

Even if all companies deliver on their net-zero targets, global temperatures will continue to rise in the short term. Emission cuts take time, residual and historical emissions remain in the atmosphere, and nature-based solutions such as tree restoration take time to deliver their full impact. That’s why we need immediate action now: to accelerate climate solutions, to halve emissions by 2030, and to give communities and ecosystems the time they need to recover.

Our approach: climate contributions

At Justdiggit, we recognise the fundamental truth that climate action must go beyond emissions reductions within company boundaries. That’s why we focus on climate contributions: measurable, high-integrity actions that help regreen degraded land, capture carbon, and deliver co-benefits for people and nature.

Our Treecovery (FMNR) programme in Central Tanzania (Dodoma and Singida) is a perfect example. Known locally as Kisiki Hai, farmers regenerate trees from existing stumps and root systems. The results are transformative: millions of trees are restored on degraded farms. Trees are known to contribute to healthier soils, higher yields, more firewood and fruits, better water retention and a significant amount of tonnes of CO₂ captured.

Proven impact through nature-based solutions

The Treecovery programmes in Central Tanzania and beyond deliver measurable outcomes that directly embody the principles of Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM).

So far, 23.2 million trees have regenerated through Treecovery, with the number in Singida nearly doubling in 2024. More than 190,000 farming households actively protecting and regenerating trees, supported by 2,200 trained champion farmers building lasting local capacity. Thereby, independent monitoring in Singida and Dodoma confirmed that we are well on our way to eventually sequester millions of tonnes of COâ‚‚. Lastly, Treecovery also delivers strong co-benefits: improved harvests, sustainable firewood, and stronger community governance, while empowering women and youth through active participation. By mobilising communities at scale and combining climate and livelihood benefits, Treecovery demonstrates how BVCM can be both principle-aligned and transformative on the ground.

Transparency and continuous improvement

We are committed to climate contribution claims by delivering measurable benefits for the climate and strong co-benefits for people and nature. To measure our climate impact, we partner with expert organisations whose independent field assessments provide reliable estimates of carbon sequestration while also helping us refine and strengthen our monitoring practices. Their findings confirm the strong performance of our Treecovery work, while guiding us to continuously improve our methods for assessing long-term carbon impact.

As mentioned above, our in-field monitoring studies in Central Tanzania confirm that regreening delivers large scale farmer-led tree growth, contributing to significant, verifiable carbon storage – far exceeding initial expectations. These results highlight both the power of nature-based solutions and the importance of measurement.

High-integrity climate action requires continuous learning and adaptation. That is why we are committed to ongoing methodological improvements and to publishing our monitoring approaches in dedicated methodology documents. This ensures that our reporting is always transparent, credible, and aligned with international standards such as the SBTi recommendations on BVCM.
