Digital Regreening Platform
Enabling 350 million African farmers to regreen their land
AMPLIFY REGREENING
For the past decade we have restored over hundreds of thousands of hectares of land, dug nearly half a million water-bunds, and brought 18 million trees back to life by using low-tech regreening techniques. This is great, but it’s not enough. It’s time to amplify our work even further. Let us introduce to you: digital regreening.
The rapid spread of internet-enabled mobile phones and network coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa has created the opportunity to use mobile phones to take a giant leap in restoration. With the development of our Digital Regreening Platform, we can sustain and accelerate exponential growth, taking us closer to achieving our goal of reaching millions of smallholder farmers.
KIJANI
The core of our digital platform is Kijani (‘green’ in Swahili), an app that provides farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa with all the tools they need to regreen land on their farms successfully.
App users can follow digital courses on proven regreening methods to improve their land and livelihood resilience.
Using GPS
Thanks to GPS data technology, we can offer personalised advice to each user, allowing us to educate farmers at scale without our physical presence. With this platform, we can truly tap into the great potential of using high-tech innovation to boost low-tech regreening initiatives.
We use locations to give personalised advice on which regreening techniques might work on users their land. All areas in green are probably suitable for water bunds. All users who live in or near a ‘bund suitable area’ have a green marker: they will receive a personalised message encouraging them to download and follow the bund course. All other users will receive a recommendation for a different course. Pretty cool isn’t it?!
“Organisations always give education and disappear, but this is the better option. I can download the app and it stays on my phone. Now I have a better chance of learning today and tomorrow."
Our four pillars
For everything we do, our strategy and approach are people-centred. This means we always focus on individual farmers and communities that have the power to change their own land. Our Digital Regreening Platform is no exception!
We use a flywheel for environmental change consisting of four pillars: inspire, educate, activate and celebrate. With the mission to enable smallholder farmers and pastoralists to regreen their own land!
Inspire
We leverage digital media at a large scale to reach farmers all over Africa. It will encourage and inspire people to either download the app (for free!) and start regreening, or to promote it to peers or relatives who are farmers.
Educate
Our app will allow us to share personalised training and regreening advice with farmers. Using online learning methods such as step-by-step courses, farmers have access to all the tools they need to successfully regreen land.
Activate
We support farmers in applying the learned methods and use community activation to ensure peers in the field are inspired to dig in as well. We are also building several gamification features in our app to boost tangible results.
Celebrate
We can automate the monitoring of the regreening impact made by the farmers using our app. Sharing and celebrating the realised impact with peers will be made easy thanks to the seamless integration with several social media platforms.
REGREENING IS DONE TOGETHER
We firmly believe that large-scale collaboration between businesses, (I)NGOs, governments and individuals is required to accomplish the transformation our planet needs. That’s why we will keep investing in expanding the impact of our projects and app by keep on growing our (local) partner network and relationships with individual farmers.
The sooner we can continue development and accelerate our scaling efforts, the faster we will be able to reach millions of farmers and provide them with the tools to regreen their land and increase their resilience against the worst effects of climate change.
"While tech billionaires chase Mars, we prioritise our 'Earth shot’. Through technology we empower millions of farmers to regreen Africa."
