On-going regreening activities in Arusha – covering 15 acres
In its first year, the CMA CGM program with LEAD Foundation, as part of the Regreening Arusha initiative, is making significant progress in the villages of Endonyomali and Leremeta, in the Longido district. These villages are strategically located near key ecological landmarks, overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro National Park to the east, bordering Amboseli National Park in the north, and adjacent to Enduimet Wildlife Management Area in the south.
Six champion farmers, including one woman, have been selected across both villages to lead restoration efforts. In early March, these champions successfully completed a four-day Training of Trainers (ToT) program, equipping them with essential skills in land restoration, data recording, and reporting. This training has further strengthened local capacity for sustainable restoration.
To enhance community engagement and awareness, four movie roadshows took place. Two in each village attracting an average of 50 participants per session.
Restoration activities are also going well. A total of 820 bunds have been dug—450 in Endonyomali and 370 in Leremeta—covering 15 acres. The work is still ongoing, with around 170 community members per village participating. Additionally, three local technicians have been trained to support the process, ensuring continued momentum in the restoration efforts.
For the next month, the selection of Grass Seed Banks (GSB) members will be done followed by the training on governance and management of the GSBs.
